About the artist
Nana Akua Akyaa Oppong was born in Accra Ghana, a hospitable and peaceful country in the West African region. She found her love for art as a little girl when she spent most of her time copying sketches of cartoons that her older sister used to make. Her best memories growing up, was her enrollment into Visual art school for her high school education- this period exposed her to the vast world of art and creativity. Although she graduated Cum Laude for her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Business Administration, she kept making art as a way of giving her inner self and deepest thoughts a voice. Her artistic practice is an exploration of how she perceives, experiences and makes sense of the world around her. Working primarily through painting and self portraits, she translates her thoughts, observations, emotions and experiences into visual narratives. Her work is not confined to a single subject; she explores people, relationships, identity, memory, environment, culture and the internal worlds that shape how we experience life. Ultimately, she sees paintings as a way of thinking. Each work is an attempt to pause, question, interpret and communicate something that may be difficult to express through my words alone.
