Akumaa is a tribute to the women who proved that family is not only defined by blood, but by unwavering presence. It is the second painting in a five-part series celebrating the women who carried me through the darkest chapters of my life- not by rescuing me, but by walking beside me.
There was a season when survival demanded everything I had. I took on multiple jobs and ventured into countless small businesses just to provide for myself and my children. Some ideas flourished, others quietly faded, but through every attempt, my sisters-in-law never questioned my resilience or my vision. Instead, they supported me in the simplest yet most powerful way- they showed up. They bought from me. They encouraged me. They reminded me that belief is best expressed through action.
Beyond their support, they gave me something even rarer: a safe place to be honest. With them, I never had to pretend to have everything figured out. We would unpack life's burdens over brunch, laughter, or a shared beer, speaking openly about disappointments, fears, and hopes. Their advice was never wrapped in judgment, only in love. They were objective enough to tell me the truth and compassionate enough to make that truth bearable.
These women entered my life as strangers who fell in love with the men in my family. Marriage brought them into our home, but love transformed them into sisters. Though we come from different backgrounds and carry different stories, we have become bound by something deeper than biology- a shared commitment to show up for one another, especially when life is at its hardest. Even in seasons when they were carrying burdens of their own, they never failed to answer my calls.
The five hands in this painting hold different flowers, each representing a unique way of navigating life. Like flowers in a garden, no two bloom the same, yet each possesses its own beauty and purpose. Together they remind us that strength has many expressions, and there is no single path to becoming whole.
The varying shades of skin celebrate the diversity of our individual journeys while affirming our shared humanity. Though our histories, personalities, and perspectives differ, love has made us family.
Rendered in a vibrant palette inspired by Africa's rich landscapes and spirit, Akumaa radiates warmth, resilience, and hope. The bold colours speak to joy reclaimed after hardship, while the flowers rise as quiet symbols of women who choose to nurture, encourage, and stand beside one another.
Akumaa is ultimately a celebration of steadfast sisterhood- a reminder that some of life's greatest blessings are the people who choose you, believe in you before success arrives, and become home long before you realise you needed one. It honours the extraordinary women whose quiet acts of faith and generosity helped me continue blooming, even when life felt determined to make me wither.
